Kansas treasurer urges balance in state budget planning
Kansas Treasurer Ron Estes warned lawmakers to keep healthy cash balances in the state general fund as they shape the next fiscal year budget. He supports growth policies but cautions against eroding the state’s ability to pay bills. The Senate planned to debate income tax cuts that could reduce general fund balances, sparking concerns over timely bill payments and funding programs. The state has relied on idle funds and carryover cash, borrowing 400 million last July and 600 million last year, with current balances above 940 million but expected to fall below 210 million within two weeks due to major payments including 181 million in bonds and 197 million for education. House Appropriations Chair Marc Rhoades commented.
