Panel probes downer slaughterhouse in Washington hearing
Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. president Steve Mendell testified amid video evidence showing downer cows at the Southern California plant being prodded and dragged to slaughter. Lawmakers pressed Mendell on whether any downer cattle entered the food supply amid a 2003 mad cow scare. Mendell conceded it appeared some downed cattle may have entered the supply, while noting he had not seen all footage.
