Community rallies to aid coach Steve Rapier in health battle
Western Kansas community bands together for Steve Rapier, a Wichita County Junior High math teacher, athletic director, and coach. His family reports decline beginning in November with vision changes and other symptoms, leading to December hospitalization and a lengthy treatment journey including Alphaferon. Donations at Western State Bank and Security State Bank, plus a Friday return from the medical center, support medical expenses as students and staff send prayers and organize fundraisers and a benefit dinner to help bring him home soon.

Budget talk and requests for four sheriff deputies
County commissioners review the strategic plan and the 2009 budget process. Sheriff Kevin Bascue asks for four additional deputies for a gang unit, plus a clerical aide, to restore patrol staffing. He cites gang-related cases and recruitment delays as justification and estimates costs around 130000 for the four officers, 23600 for office equipment, and 450000 for a public works leader and grader.

Holcomb Opens Door to Transfers Policy
Holcomb's transfer policy discussion, amid shifting enrollment from a peak of 953 in 1999-00 to 849 this year, raises funding and tax questions. Residents favor the policy in a mail survey, while some oppose it citing growth concerns. The board also approved plumbing and acoustics work, social studies books purchases, a calendar shift, and staffing changes.
