Unpublished Army studies indicate young blacks and women increasingly refuse to join due to fear of combat, with Iraq as the context. The August 2004 analysis notes broader negative attitudes toward the Army among U S. youth and a rise in fear of death or injury as a barrier to service.
The Associated Press reports declining willingness among Black youths and women to join the Army, driven by fears of deployment to Iraq. Studies show the war as a major turnout deterrent, even as re-enlistment interest remains. Black recruits have declined from 22.7 percent after 9/11 to about 16.4 percent in 2003, while the Army trails its 2005 goal by about 6 percent after five months.
The Army reports a slump in recruiting young Black and female recruits since 2001. Officials cite 15.9 percent last year, with female representation dropping from 21.6 percent in 2001 to 19.2 percent, and further to 17.1 percent this year.
