Population decline hits rural western Kansas towns hard
Western Kansas counties face steep population losses with Kiowa County down 22.12 percent after the Greensburg tornado and Finney County dipping 9.25 percent. Hutchinson in Reno County gained slightly, while Stevens and Hamilton counties showed tiny gains. Experts cite aging populations, plant closures, and broader depopulation as Gov Brownback proposes rural opportunity zones to offset losses.

Kansas Hispanic population surges amid immigration crackdown debate
Census figures show Kansas Hispanics rising 59 percent since 2000, now over 10 percent of residents. Wichita resident Sharon Spauth notes economic downturn elsewhere drew new workers to western Kansas meat plants. Critics warn a new Arizona style law could curb growth by halting Latino population gains and threaten families, including green card holders, amid legislative debates.
