Holcomb resident Mary Eddy recalls fear of intruders as she attends the first matinee of Capote in Garden City. The film examines Truman Capote’s obsession with the 1959 Clutter murders, his six years of research, and the writing of In Cold Blood, inspiring a new journalism style. Eddy read the book in the 1960s and found the reenactment chilling. About 35 in attendance, with others traveling from Lamar, Colorado, to catch the limited release at Sequoyah Theater, which runs through Thursday.
The USDA will accept public comments on a petition by the group In Defense of Animals calling for stricter elephant care at zoos. The petition targets Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City and 32 other zoos, alleging violations of the Animal Welfare Act due to small enclosures causing arthritis and foot infections. The Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund granted Smart Start Southwest Kansas over 488 thousand dollars for 2006 to expand literacy, child care and dental programs across 13 counties. Rebecca Clancy said the funds will help the group, started last year, help all children birth to five enter school ready to succeed. The grant follows a 459 thousand dollar award last year that supported training for providers, immunization support and interpreter registry, plus six playground grants across five counties.
