Garden City police seek a green late model 1990s Chevrolet S10 Blazer tied to a Western State Bank robbery on Main Street. A witness described a masked, glove wearing suspect entering the rear passenger area near 607 N Seventh St. No plates were on the vehicle and the driver was not the robber. Officers, aided by K9 and federal and state agencies, found nothing linked to the suspect. The bank clerks were unharmed and the investigation continues with a reward offered for information.
Hamilton County resident Justin Trussell, 39, remained in critical condition at Via Christi Regional Medical Center after a Saturday morning fire near Kendall. He underwent skin grafts for third degree burns and faces infection and pneumonia risks as his wife Sherri and two sons slept inside. A truck driver Kris Krasser helped pull in and rescue a boy, with the family expressing gratitude.
The Kansas House passed a concealed carry bill 78 to 45 sending it to the Senate. It falls six votes short of a two thirds veto override and would require KBIs to issue permits starting Jan 1 to qualified 21 year old American citizens who pay 150 dollars after eight hours of training. Convicted felons and those treated for mental illness or substance abuse in five years would be barred.
During a Wednesday debate the Kansas House added amendments to narrow the bill but supporters remain confident. Proponents say the measure helps Kansans defend themselves, especially women, with Rep Peggy Long-Mast noting her experience as a crime victim. Opponents warn of gun violence and failed attempts to tighten permits or keep local control. Rep Jim Yonally shared a personal robbery-related caution.
Sunflower Power Corp moves forward with the second Holcomb plant near Sunflower area but delays persist. CEO Chris Hauck cites permitting and investor timing as key factors while seeking an 18 month extension on the KDHE air quality permit. Public hearings set for March 16 at the Finney County Administrative Center. The project aims for a 600 megawatt plant with a spring 2008 commercial operation and about 1 billion in cost, with investors and buyers still to be secured. Sunflower serves about 120,000 people via six co ops in 34 western Kansas counties.
