Finney County faces tax hit if state bill passes
Finney County leaders warn House Bill 2285 could strip property taxes on certain industrial fixtures by reclassifying machinery and equipment as tax exempt since 2006. If enacted, county revenue could fall by about 1.7 million, risking higher local property taxes and reduced services. Major employers Tyson and Sunflower Electric would be affected.

Brownback urges aggressive plan to conserve Kansas water
Gov. Sam Brownback called for a bold statewide push to conserve water amid an ongoing drought. He urged publicity campaigns to urge farmers to plant less water intensive crops and for Wichita to share its conservation plans with other cities while preparing for future droughts that could last years and require costly water projects. The drought threatens Cheney Reservoir and may trigger further restrictions and rate hikes as Wichita invests hundreds of millions to secure water. Kansas climatologist Mary Knapp notes snow in the past weeks will not end the extreme drought.
