Judge rules Pain Relief Network lacks standing in painkiller case
U S District Judge Wesley Brown denied the Pain Relief Network's bid for a temporary restraining order and for a court to restore Dr Stephen Schneider's medical license. The NY group sought to shield 1000 patients of Schneider from DOJ action after overdose deaths linked to his clinic. Brown said the group had no standing and that a civil suit could not block criminal proceedings. The judge noted the request would intrude on state and federal actions and warned that many patients still lack care.

USDA suspends meat inspectors amid largest beef recall
In Los Angeles, the USDA placed at least two inspectors from Westland Hallmark on paid leave after a record 143 million pounds of beef recall from the Chino plant. A union head cited possible third suspensions, while the agency offered no comment on personnel matters. The recall followed an undercover Humane Society video showing workers injuring and manipulating downer cattle. The plant supplied about 20 percent of meat used in the National School Lunch Program and has since closed.
