Amendment could threaten Wichita County jobs over packer ownership
The Grassley-Harkin Amendment, tied to the Farm Bill, could ban packers from owning live stock and force Caprock Feedlot in Leoti to close. Kansas economists project Wichita County could lose 187 direct and indirect jobs, $89 million in income, $61 million in economic activity, and population decline, with 49 fewer students in the local schools. The study frames a worst case scenario amid wider debates on market access and livestock production.
