Clear and moonlit tonight with east northeast winds. Partly sunny Friday with east-southeast winds. Humidity falls from about 85 percent in the morning to 30 percent in the afternoon. Saturday brings plenty of sunshine and south southeast winds.
Wyandotte and Ford counties backed casino gambling with about 82 percent for Woodlands slot machines and nearly 81 percent for a state owned casino. Ford County approved a destination casino in Dodge City while Wyandotte eyed a 2010 destination resort. Preliminary plans foresee a 900+ slot machine floor, 670 jobs, and 55 to 60 million in annual revenue.
Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius urged House and Joint Economic Committee panels to favor long term rural development plans over competitive grants. She highlighted Greensburg rebuild efforts through a Public Square Process and cited early childhood education funding as essential for future success. Sebelius praised Kansas Office of Rural Opportunity and called for smarter federal investments in rural areas.
Liam Madden, 22, an Iraq War veteran and member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, rejected a Marine Corps offer to end a discharge hearing by agreeing to stop wearing his uniform at protests and to state his statements were not disloyal or inaccurate. The case involves alleged disloyal statements made during a New York speech and a protest in which Madden wore uniform parts. Madden contends IRR status exempts him from military rules, while officials consider possible outcomes including no discharge. Madden is touring East Coast military installations with fellow veterans including Adam Kokesh.
