Six Are Selected For Trip to Moon
Six young scientists were chosen to land on the moon in the Apollo program and will begin training next month. Two trained pilots will start astronaut training at Houston's Manned Spacecraft Center while four others go to Williams Air Force Base, Alabama, for a year of flight training. The group’s names emerged via a Houston Chronicle copyright story and were officially confirmed later. The six include Dr. Frank C. Michel of Rice University and Dr. Duane E. Graveline, with four others from Stanford, Ford subsidiary, Navy and USGS backgrounds. Graveline spoke of the moon as an “un climbed mountain,” and Michel expressed lifelong space interest. Current plans for the first flight call for three crew, with no scientist aboard.

Ark River flood victim found near Garden City
The body of 25 year old Gerald Lee Morris, son of Raymond G Morris, was recovered six miles southeast of Garden City in a field under water. He vanished June 18 while with Penny Sparks and Johnie Baugh as floodwaters rose, Morris slipping away while Sparks and Baugh reached a tree. Sparks and Baugh survived. Morris' body identified by a pocket key. Funeral services planned in Garden City with burial at Valley View Cemetery. Also noted was Emanuel Weldon, 45, who drowned southwest of Lakin. Stanley Mike East, 12, of Wichita died when a horse pulled him into a car at a street signal.
