Antique harvest draws heat and crowds in Haskell County
Crowds gathered at the ninth annual Old Time Wheat Harvest on Steve Weidner’s Sublette farm to see a 1947 John Deere pull combine and other vintage equipment. The event, begun in 2002 by Floyd Frank and local farmers, showcases 1930s and 40s wheat farming gear and includes restored cars like a 1927 Nash.

Sheriff lends helping hand during Kansas harvest
Kearny County Sheriff Jim Jarboe, 28 years in office, traded his badge for gloves and joined harvest crews in Lakin as wheat trucks rolled through Main Street signaling the day’s start. For 18 years he has headed west when the wheat ripens to lend assistance amid the harvest.

Local entomologist Larry Buschman retires from KSU
Garden City native and Congo raised entomologist Larry Buschman retires July 20 after more than 30 years at Kansas State University. Born in southwest Kansas and raised in Congo by missionary parents, he began in experimental science after a childhood tasting of a local brew.
