Tornado-scarred Greensburg elevator ready for harvest
In Greensburg Kansas the Southern Plains Cooperative grain elevator towers remained standing after the May 4 tornado that destroyed most of the town. Manager Danny McLarty says the facility is about 80 percent back to normal and ready for wheat harvest despite damaged sheds and missing fuel pumps. The two towers built in 1954 and 1934 hold roughly 1.05 million bushels with storage for liquid fertilizer and other supplies. A generator powers a temporary trailer as operations resume, with fuel pumps expected online midweek to serve producers.

Greensburg seeks full time staff to rebuild after tornado
Greensburg faces a staffing challenge as it works to rebuild after the May 4 tornado. The city needs 12 new positions including five in community development and a larger building codes and planning department. Volunteers from the International Code Council now cover duties, but a permanent, subsidized team is planned with state support until federal funding arrives. City leaders will recruit from colleges and vocational schools, offering internships to grads and students who may become full time staff.
