Garden City officials and the Chamber of Commerce warn Amtrak could shut all services this weekend. City staff have not heard formal word from Amtrak or Congress as a meeting with the U S Department of Transportation Secretary and the Amtrak board looms. Local leaders urge continued rail service and have contacted Washington lawmakers for a renewal.
St. Catherine Hospital faces wind delays in the inpatient project, shifting schedules but aiming to complete the current phase by June 2003. Leanne Irsik notes seven days of lost time due to winds over 25 mph as cranes cannot operate. Two teams rotate seven days a week to minimize downtime, with the phase containing a surgery lab ICU new cafeteria and a three story tower for a women s center including obstetrics and nursery materials management and laundry. The top two floors will be shelled and finished in the next phase within six months of completion.
A 14-year-old Garden City boy, Harvey Morales, is in stable condition at a Wichita hospital after a Saturday morning shooting in the Towns Riverview South area following a confrontation with 14-year-old Erick Acosta. Morales was airlifted to Via Christi St. Francis campus for treatment.
Farmers in Healy Co-op Elevator area in Lane County report a calm wheat harvest with prices at 2.91 per bushel, up from 2.59 last year. Test weights run 55 to 58 pounds per bushel and yields vary, with reports from 26 to 40 bushels per acre. In Satanta, Cropland Co-op grain manager Travis Garey says the mood is relief as the harvest progresses.
Dwayne and Roberta Seifried of Dighton stand atop their 10 foot sign on Kansas Highway 96 to post messages to travelers and the community from the former drive in site west of town. The couple built their home on the drive-in site and use the marquee to share brief phrases from happy birthday to I love you with locals.
