Senate Rejects Depletion Cut and Keeps 27 1/2 Percent

The Senate blocked a bid to reduce the oil depletion allowance from 27½ percent, effectively shelving the issue for the year as Congress nears July adjournment. Proponents like Senator Douglas argued for a sliding scale, but the measure failed 30 to 56, with supporters warning reductions could trigger lease losses and wasted supplies. The current rate, in effect since 1926, remains under review but intact through 1961.
