Clean up needed as High Plains aquifer nitrate levels rise
U S Geological Survey findings show nitrates in the High Plains aquifer, including the Ogallala underlying western Kansas, exceed safe drinking water standards in 16 percent of central-region sites. Pesticides and dissolved solids also appear, hinting at farm activity as a pollution source. The aquifer undergirds 174000 square miles across eight states and serves over 2.2 million people. The study, begun in 1999, aims to continue through 2005.
