A toe tappin old time fiddle music program with Joe and Jon Irsik will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Garden Valley Retirement Village 1505 E Spruce St. Admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 275 5036.
The Steve Weidner farm north of Sublette will host the 2011 Old Time Wheat Harvest, a demonstration of antique farming in the 1930s and 1940s. About 100 acres will be harvested with pull combines, starting near noon and continuing through the afternoon. People may bring their antique equipment to display and guided wagon rides will be available for close observation. The last of three codefendants in the killing of 18-year-old Keighley Alyea was sentenced by Johnson County Judge James Franklin Davis in Johnson County District Court to life with no parole for 50 years and nearly 19 more years for kidnapping and robbery. Joseph Mattox, 23, was convicted in April of first-degree murder. Prosecutors say Alyea was stabbed beaten and choked before being left in a car trunk on September 30, 2009, her body found a week later in rural Cass County Missouri.
James Butler Jr. and his brother Marlin Butler of Martinsville Texas face sentencing in Kansas federal court for conspiring to violate wildlife laws and trafficking deer. The cases involve Camp Lone Star guides who offered illegal hunts and the destruction of deer mounts. Jurisdiction spans Louisiana Kansas and Texas with prosecutors seeking 41 months for James and 27 months for Marlin plus fines and restitution.
