Harvest Tempo Rises in Garden City Wheat Harvest
The 1962 wheat harvest in Garden City area accelerates with many combines in town and overnight stays at hotels and motels. W. B. Trebilcock of the Kansas State Employment Service notes about 10 percent of Finney County wheat harvested so far, with no labor surplus and showers slowing work briefly. Coordination via a military-like operation led by Ed Schoepner in Great Bend supports regional placements as hotels like the Warren, Windsor, and Stone fill up and motels report no vacancy. Tourists and traveling sales staff join harvest workers, while Finnup Park draws growing visitor flow from bus groups and Boy Scouts en route to camps.
