Worldwide hijack wave tests security as skyjacking spikes
Through mid June at least two dozen commercial jets were seized this year amid tightened security. Notable incidents include John Shane’s $50,000 ransom on a Hughes Airwest DC9 in Colorado, Heinrich von George’s $200,000 ransom and two parachutes in New York, and other bold hijackings from New Delhi to Athens, Provo to British Honduras, and Tel Aviv to West Germany.
