Forty years after the Arkansas River flood, Garden City recalls the 1965 disaster when heavy rains in eastern Colorado sent floodwaters downstream. By June 18 the river breached dikes, prompting mayoral orders for sandbags and alarms as water pushed into town. Residents recount emergency conditions and streets turning to streams.
Hydrologist Rick Sloan of the National Weather Service in Dodge City notes that dry river beds do not preclude floods. Army Corps studies cite a possible discharge of 53 000 to 114 000 cubic feet per second, far above the 1965 peak of 130 000 cfs seen in Garden City on June 17.

Ottawa High senior Jill Spratt argues such programs support teamwork and leadership, helping students stay active and focused. The special session on school finance follows an advisory from the state school board.
National Safety Council notes 27 farm accidents in Kansas in 2004, 14 fatal. Fatalities include a 35-year-old in Stevens County January 9 entangled in cotton gin, a 6-year-old boy in Stanton County June 15 run over after falling from a tractor, and a 62-year-old in Hamilton County March 5 crushed by a rolling tractor.
In southwest Kansas a lull before harvest drags on as rain showers moisten fields. Syracuse Co-op reported only one wheat load by Friday afternoon with test weight 59.2 pounds, while dryland wheat in Grant County remains wet. Cropland Co-op in Ulysses logged its first dryland load Wednesday with few since, farmers cautious yet hopeful about test weight and quality.
