Harvest of the 1956 wheat crop in Finney county is expected to peak mid to late this week. Cutting has been mainly south of the Arkansas river with spotty work in the central and northern areas. Peak harvest likely Wednesday or Thursday, with top receipts 30,000 bushels at Co-op elevators and 12,000 at Garden City Co-op. Wheat quality reported as extra good and moisture around 11 to 12 percent. Dryland yields range 10 to 20 bushels per acre, with Comanche wheat quoted at 25 to 30. An new variety No. 12518 averaged 15 bushels. Irrigated land harvest should start midweek if weather holds.

Undersheriff George Hamm and Sheriff Tom Cole left here Saturday to escort Toland back later this week. Toland is accused of breaking and entering a machine shed owned by Finney County farmer R. M. Jamison and stealing wrenches drills and other tools in early May. He will also be questioned in Garden City.

Farm Couple Trapped in Burning Dairy Barn
Holton Kansas reports Mr. and Mrs. George Brein trapped in a fire that destroyed a dairy barn on their farm six miles northwest of town. Sheriff Lyle Rawling pinned the incident to a 7 a.m. blast from a kerosene stove used to heat water for washing milk buckets. The stove explosion appears to have trapped the couple inside.
