Labor Backs Meany During Clash over Foreign Policy
AFL CIO President George Meany wins support amid a clash with Walter Reuther over foreign policy. Meany defends the federation against charges of undermining Johnson’s aims toward the Communist world and criticizes Reuther’s allegations of CIA ties and ILO actions. The Executive Council backed Meany 18 to 6 after a heated session. Reuther offered a milder response, while Meany asserted the ILO must be saved from a Communist takeover. A subsequent note mentions Girl Scouts Day Camp plans in Garden City at a local farm along the Arkansas River with outdoor activities and crafts.
