Begin Threatens Action Over Syrian Missiles in Lebanon
Prime Minister Menachem Begin warned at a campaign rally that Israel would attack Syrian missiles if not moved from Lebanon. Syria countered that U S mediator Philip Habib is failing due to American support for Israel. Begin said he told Habib he would not wait an indefinite period for Syrians to withdraw Soviet SAM 6 missiles. The missiles were moved into east central Lebanon after Syria lost two helicopters, and Begin suggested air strikes could target the batteries if necessary.
