A powerful tornado struck central Illinois yesterday tearing through Springfield with tornadic winds and heavy rain. Two women died and more than 50 people were injured in the aftermath. Emergency crews worked through the night to assess damage and aid residents.
A massive Southeast Springfield flood and tornado killed seven members of a Beaufort farm family and damaged dozens of homes across Illinois. The spree unleashed 8.63 inches of rain in St. Louis, snapped trees, toppled a governor mansion tree, and crippled communications in Jacksonville and surrounding counties. Hospitals treated about 50, many injured by collapsing roofs and debris. The disaster followed another storm in four days, with widespread property loss and power interruptions.

A Santa Fe Railway passenger train collided with a car at a rural crossing in Fountain Colorado, killing rancher Clark Hanna about 35 and his five year old daughter Randy. Randy's twin Ginger survived with serious injuries and was taken to Clockner Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs after suffering a broken leg and arm and multiple cuts.
Fresh out city manager Deane Wiley expected a pair of flamingoes for Lee Richardson 700 but got a letter saying none were available. The Miami Rare Bird farm notified Wiley their stock was depleted after he ordered early in the month. Flamingoes carried a $15 price tag and were part of a limited supply.

Paul Whalen 30 confessed to the killings claiming the old man upstairs planned it, saying Jesus Christ ordered it. Whalen recounted a daylong vigil before shooting Huff then firing through a bathroom door at Mrs Huff. A separate note says a employment office is to open in Wellington with Caldwell already hosting a site.

Same day service available for packages under 100 pounds delivered to customers in serviced towns or held for pickup by rural patrons at carrier homes.
National Guard Battery A of the 161st Armored Field Artillery will arrive in Garden City tomorrow at 10 a.m. by Santa Fe rail, fresh from a two week summer training at Camp McCoy Wisconsin. A 12 man convoy led by Lt Ralph Gutherie debarked yesterday with local equipment. Range and firing results have not yet been released.
