Weather Causes Red Sorghum Color and Plant Rot
Cold weather blocks phosphorus assimilation and sugar-to-starch conversion, giving sorghum a red hue. Dr. John Frazier of Kansas State University explains sugars drive the color. Red spots and a red to brown rot may appear on young roots and crowns, caused by Fusarium wilt, which can kill plants. No practical control exists. avoid planting sorghum until soil stays at 70 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer.
