USD 363 board tackles Holcomb road plan safety concerns

At a Holcomb area USD 363 Board meeting parents and residents warned that a Kansas Department of Transportation plan to widen U.S. 50 and build an overpass to carry Big Lowe Road traffic past Holcomb High School could create dangers for students and bus riders. Concerns focus on heavy plant traffic near bus routes and potential backups on Main Street near two elementary schools. KDOT district engineer Larry Thompson noted years of planning and public forums that led to plan changes to address safety.

Area farmers disappointed with yields in southwest Kansas

Finney County farmer Mark Lawrance reported his best wheat crop at 21 bushels per acre as drought and diseases reduced yields across the region. Kansas State University figures mark 40 to 45 bushels per acre as typical for the area, with wheat streak mosaic leaf rust and drought cited by the Department of Agriculture as factors. Lawrance noted poor results from both irrigated and dryland fields as harvest shifts westward.

Dixon and Dixon to challenge Ward Loyd seat

Ward Loyd has announced he will not seek reelection leaving the 123rd District seat open. Jeff Whitham and Roy Dixon, longtime local Republicans, filed to run for the seat with an Aug. 1 primary and Nov. 7 general election on the calendar. Whitham waited for Loyd to decide, while Dixon acted independently.

Loyd Among Lawmakers Opting Out of Re election

TOPEKA HNS The Kansas filing deadline closed with forty two incumbents and one newcomer avoiding party opposition in this year?s House races. Eleven contests drew thirty eight candidates while veterans Shaun Weber and Ward Loyd left the chamber. Weber and Loyd cited time to hand off the baton with Loyd a longtime moderate who helped push criminal reform and school funding.

Newcomers enter county race with three challengers

Finney County District 5 will see three first-time candidates for the open seat with incumbent Republican Larry Jones facing Democrat Cletus Feldt and Republican Dan Linton. Primary set August 1, general election November 7. Feldt, 73, warns odds are against him in a GOP-leaning county and seeks improvements to the Finney County Fairgrounds, including an electronic sign on Main Street.
