Quiet the clamor in hospitals with smarter alarms
Researchers from Harvard and Cambridge Health Alliance, led by Dr. Jeffrey Ellenbogen, studied hospital noise using 12 healthy volunteers in Mass General's sleep lab to see how electronic alarms from IVs and other devices disrupt sleep. Findings show beeps and bedside chatter disturb sleep even at low levels, with heart rates rising up to 10 BPM during arousals and many awakenings going unreported. Hospitals test flashing signals at nurses stations to reduce bedside noise while maintaining alerts. The study highlights sleep deprivation's link to delirium and broader health risks, urging quieter wards for frail patients.
