Advent satellite program shifts to Air Force control
The Defense Department moved responsibility for developing the Advent military communications satellite system from the Army to the Air Force. The plan targets 1964 operation and envisions three to 10 microwave satellites in a 22,300 mile equatorial orbit to relay rapid voice and data. The Air Force will also develop 40 to 50 smaller polar orbit satellites while the Army retains advent ground equipment and some parts already built by General Electric and Bendix.
