Red China Premier Rejects Formosa Ceasefire Talk
Peiping Premier Zhou Enlai said a ceasefire cannot serve as a bargaining chip to ease tensions in the Formosa area. He warned foreign armed intervention would trigger international conflict, opposing such involvement. The stance contrasts with Eisenhower's April 27 pledge to meet Red China to discuss a ceasefire.

Russians Overrated for Cleverness on World Front
Washington columnist James Marlow argues Russians are not as clever as claimed, tracing shifts after Stalin’s death from hardline tactics to a softer approach. He highlights power struggles in Moscow, Bulganin and Khrushchev as new faces, and Beijing and Peking’s role in easing Western tensions. The piece notes moves toward Austrian independence, a Big Four talk, Yugoslavia outreach, and a U.S.-China dialogue as evidence of improved Kremlin tact.

Wingless airship tests pause after nose wheel shimmy
Emporia Virginia reporter notes Charles Pritchard, a 46 year old railroad foreman, postponed a flight test of his wingless airship after a nose wheel shimmy. About 1500 spectators watched as the octagonal aluminum craft, built without wings, was moved to Kluger’s Metal Shop for repairs after a rough taxi run caused loss of steering.
