Bishop Challenges Claim of China Chief
HONG KONG An American Roman Catholic bishop who spent five years in detention in Red China today contradicted Peiping claims that religious freedom exists under its rules. Bishop Frederick Donaghy of New Bedford MA told newsmen that Red Chinese Premier Chou En-lai's statement at the Asian-African conference in Bandung Indonesia voicing this claim was completely false. The bishop crossed the border into Hong Kong yesterday after being expelled from China. Washington Sen Russell said he will oppose tying the administration's national reserve plan to extending the Draft Act and will move for recommittal for hearings if the Senate acts. He favors expanded national reserve and universal military training, but action hinges on House passage.
