Sheriff Bascue seeks a 2009 budget of 5,060,623 to fund four new deputies and a professional standards officer, moving three patrol deputies into a city county gang unit. The plan includes higher fuel and inmate food costs offset by jail revenue. a joint county city gang unit remains under discussion at a joint meeting.
Kristi Schmitt of the Finney County Health Department notes a modest budget rise driven by the pay for performance program and higher salaries while grant funding totaling about 453 thousand dollars supports teen pregnancy reduction and emergency preparedness. The department has not exhausted 2008 funds and cites grant reach into teen education from junior high to high school amid ongoing teen pregnancy rate concerns.
The Kids' College program on the GCCC campus runs daily through August 1 with four classes a day from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Topics include crafts pets computers cooking and more. Teachers Rose Buschman Machotka and Marissa Dugan say the aim is to visualize learning and prepare youths for future education while fostering social benefits.
