Silver ring pledge gains ground amid abstinence push
In Toledo, junior high students like Katie Chromik pledge to save sex for marriage amid taunts and peer pressure. The Silver Ring Thing, funded with 1.2 million in federal grants since 2003, promotes abstinence via church shows and a silver ring, expanding internationally including South Africa and the U K. Critics say abstinence only programs miss the mark, while supporters argue secular sex education has failed to curb STD rates among ages 15 to 24. funding faces civil liberties scrutiny from the ACLU.
