Americans in limousines and shorts waited through the night to pay respects to Ronald Reagan, 40th president, lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda. Scouts, workers, tourists, and a Native American partook, reflecting a cross section of the nation as the casket draped with the flag awaited the service.
Statewide elected Republicans laid a wreath for Ronald Reagan and displayed oversized sympathy cards in Topeka. Kansans were invited to sign the cards before they are sent to Reagan’s family. The event reflected Reagan’s enduring appeal and his impact on American belief in the country.
Merylin Douglass of the Kansas State Nurses Association urged Garden City Community College to hire an additional nursing instructor to handle more students. Evelyn Bowman, former director of nursing and paramedics programs, was terminated after two differences over vision and philosophy. Oil prices above forty dollars a barrel push Kansas severance tax receipts toward a higher than expected $18.7 million budget goal. Through the year the state has collected $16.7 million, about $1.6 million more than a year ago, though analysts warn gains may be offset by lower sales and motor fuel taxes and higher vehicle costs. State Budget Director Duane Goossen calls the gain not a windfall, given broader economic effects.
