Circus Returns To Garden City In March With Big Top
A one day stand by the Al G Kelley Miller Circus comes to Garden City on Wednesday with matinee at 2 p.m. and night show at 8 p.m. The event features 21 elephants a vast menagerie and 127 horses ponies and donkeys. Officials expect a downtown parade and the feeding of animals will be observed. The visit marks the first in years and echoes local interest in agriculture and local station support.

The State Board of Health recommends $200000 in federal matching funds for remodeling St. Catherine hospital. Dominican sisters who run the hospital must raise $300000 more to qualify. They planned a larger $600000 federal request for a new county hospital, but project plans remain undeclared. Dust and Hail Pour Over Southwest Kansas Storms
Violent summer weather battered Garden City and surrounding areas with heavy rain, hail, and dust. A band of storms moved east of Garden City around 7 p.m., dumping over three inches of rain in minutes and causing flash flooding. Hail damaged crops and roofs near the F A Dickenson ranch, where 2 1/2 to 3 inches of rain fell with hail for an hour. Winds reached 86 to 90 mph in central Kansas, and several tornado funnels were reported. Rain gauges recorded scattered rainfall beyond the city, with Denton ranches and highways affected as storms eased by nightfall.

Rainy Weather Triggers Multiple County Crashes
Heavy rain caused a two car collision near Kalvesta injuring Arlen Lillibridge Jr. and Marcia Wycoff, both in fair condition at Tri nity hospital. A northbound pickup driven by William Dear Daniels failed to stop in a rain slick intersection, rolling the Lillibridge vehicle. Additional wrecks occurred at highways 156 and 23 near Garden City, with McFarland and Kemper struck by debris and flooding. A pickup and trailer were forced off a road near Holcomb by a car without headlights, while Verdigis River flooding toppled a bridge near Coffeyville, washing away two workers. Two men were electrocuted drilling a well in nearby Joseph, Missouri.
