Union of GAO and Postmaster General Endorse Rural Post Office Closures
The GAO and Postmaster General agree that 12 192 small rural post offices could be closed to save about 100 million dollars without harming service. They propose phasing out two thirds of fourth and third class offices, noting rural mail service in tested communities stayed the same or improved after closures. Third class serve about 250 families each, fourth class about 50. Overall loss is around 160 million annually.
