Romney Warns Essex Workers On Strikes At Essex Wire
Gov. George Romney urged Essex Wire Corp workers to vote to settle a long running strike as leaders from Essex and the IUE AFL-CIO expressed cautious optimism that a modified four year contract will be accepted by about 180 strikers. The pact includes a small wage increase and was hammered out in talks with federal and state mediators. Police and National Guard members patrolled the plant amid past picket line violence as union leaders sought to clarify remaining issues before a ratification vote.
