A shower from hail and rain drenched the Western Gray County town near the post office causing slick sidewalks and potential hazards next winter. Gus Garden received a friendly jab from Dudley Howland, a former Garden Citian now in Massachusetts, remarking Kansans still need rain gear.

Senate Sets Lid On Foreign Aid Ceilings
The Senate approved a 4.7 billion dollar ceiling on foreign aid for the coming fiscal year, roughly aligning with Kennedy's request. The measure preserves flexibility as Congress plans separate appropriation bills, with debates over aid to Poland and Yugoslavia and exemptions on surplus food gifts. Senate actions leave intent to cut or modify the final funding for military and development loans pending the annual appropriation.
