Relic Fire Truck Reborn by Garden City Activist
Roy King takes custody of Garden City’s first motorized fire-fighting truck from the city commission. He plans a yearlong restoration to look as it did in service with wooden steps and original bell and hand pump siren. The 35 year old American LaFrance vehicle weighs about 8 600 pounds and may appear in local parades once finished.

Dodge Firm Is Low Bidder On Armory Construction
Bids opened in Topeka favor Dodge City and Salina firms for armory work in Garden City and Medicine Lodge. Noland Construction of Dodge City submitted the apparent low base bid for Garden City at 111 295, with bids elsewhere up to 124 312. Earlier Garden City bids were rejected for unclear specifications and several bidders withdrew after noting missing alternates. Garden City voters approved a 50 000 bond last August with state matching funds. the state may cover the remaining cost gap. Construction dates have not been released.

Experiment Station Has Figured in Farm Advances
Garden City Kansas experimental station marks 50 years of service with the June 9 10 anniversary events. Since 1907 the outpost has driven dryland and irrigation farming research, expanding from limited equipment to a current annual research budget of 67913 dollars. The station plans field trials across southwestern Kansas with support from farmers and local groups.

Safeway Opens New Garden City Store At Five Points
Safeway launches its first Garden City supermarket at Five Points intersection of 13th Street and US 50 and US 83. The store features about 125 parking spots, self service meat and produce sections, a 90 foot refrigerated meat case, Early American bakery, over 3,000 items with frozen prepared foods emphasis, and a pastel interior with new slimline lighting.
