Police investigate a theft at the municipal swimming pool. John T. Lohmeier reports his wrist watch billfold and cowboy boots stolen from the dressing room between 2 and 4 30 pm yesterday afternoon.
The Army will discharge 475 ready reservists and move 500000 others to standby reserve over the next year starting July 1. The goal is to reduce military service liability of World War II and Korean veterans, leaving only those fit and with needed qualifications for immediate active duty. The ready reserve now totals about 1 885 000, National Guard 407 000, by month end. standby reserve stands at 8 500.
Washington report says Western Union Telegraph Co. workers avert a nationwide walkout under a two year contract raising hourly pay by 13 cents retroactive to June 1 for 45,000 employees. The deal includes better pensions and Messenger allowances and adds 5 cents per hour from January 1 to adjust wage scales.
Mrs. Gertrude Brown aged 71 widow of the late Atchison Globe editor collapsed and died yesterday while driving home from a friend's funeral.

Kansas lawmakers pressed for a multi million dollar Agriculture Department facility in Manhattan Kansas. Senator Carlson said Kansas State College and its surrounding community can meet site requirements. Representative Avery cited Dr James A McCain noting the college has property to offer at no charge and Manhattan could supply tracts if needed. Kansas State president affirmed interest and planned to lead a delegation to St Louis for site hearings.
Britain will shut the Scapa Flow naval base in the Orkneys after determining it no longer yields sufficient use in peace or war to justify keeping the installations. The Admlralty spokesman cited lack of need and high costs as reasons for the closure.

Retired Admiral Charles Turner Joy, who headed the United Nations truce team in Korea, died yesterday at age 61 in a San Diego naval hospital. His widow said he had leukemia for four years. Joy commanded U N naval forces in the Korean War and in 1951 became senior delegate to the Korean armistice conference.
The Burlington Board of Aldermen, evenly split with six Republicans and six Democrats, has cast 609 ballots without selecting a president. Ten attempts were made on Tuesday to reach a decision, all ending in a 6-6 deadlock.
Yugoslav leader Tito told reporters in Moscow that his visit will not affect Yugoslavia US relations. He said friendship with the United States would continue as before and noted Yugoslavia’s independent foreign policy. Khrushchev and Bulganin attended a Kremlin gala as Tito spoke of cooperation and peace.
Elin Griffiths Lattimer, 30, a senior at the University of California Los Angeles, sues philosophy professor Donald A. Pratt for 10,000 dollars claiming he punched her in the nose during a May 2 argument over Socrates and Plato. The suit, naming the university board of regents as co-defendant, seeks damages for grievous bodily harm and mental agony. Dr Pratt declined comment while remarking on Socrates.
Istanbul Parliament approved a stringent press law imposing prison terms for newsmen and newspaper suspensions for false reporting. The vote followed an all-night session marked by fist fights and a revolver skittering across the chamber floor.
A 30-year-old Tulsa furniture store operator, Jack C. Miller, is accused of acting as a fence for a burglary gang. Police say accomplices Floyd Ernest Lee, 32, and Edna Faye Bagley, 20, admitted to at least 11 burglaries across eastern Oklahoma and Kansas, and implicated Miller.

Kansas saw several new temperature records in May with Dodge City posting the warmest May on record and Wichita its warmest since 1896. Concordia reported the driest May of record as western Kansas shaded 90 plus degrees on 10 to 18 days, with Kingman and Elkhart hitting 104.
Army private Richard A. Hagelberger, 23, at Fort Leavenworth, was ordered to die for the murder and robbery of two German civilians near Diebach, Germany on April 19, 1952. Co-defendant Pvt John F. Vegneault was sentenced to death but commuted by President Eisenhower to 55 years and is serving at Leavenworth.
