Kansas Department of Agriculture Secretary Adrian Polansky met with Garden City leaders to balance protecting at risk property and avoiding undue hardship from flood plain designation. City figures show 936 properties and 87 vacant lots in Garden City could enter the 100 year flood plain, with 934 properties and 181 parcels in Finney County outside city limits. The city has approved a $23,000 study by Wilson & Co. to inform decisions.
The Finney County Community Health Coalition launches a multimedia campaign to cut underage drinking, directing parents and youths to teenthinking.org for up to date English and Spanish resources. Coordinators Troy Unruh and partners from business, faith, schools unite to attack the problem on all fronts. The Teen Thinking project is funded by a near 1 million Kansas Strategic Prevention Framework grant.
STOPEKA(AP) Legislative leaders and Gov. Parkinson warn more budget reductions are likely as state revenues fall. The $13 billion budget cut education by 2.6 percent and overall spending 3.3 percent. Public schools higher education and mandated services comprise 85 percent of spending. Senate President Steve Morris says only 15 percent remains flexible and suggests reviewing all programs including education. He notes school officials demand more funds and mentions possible lawsuits to force higher education spending.
Community mourns Dr. George Tiller who was shot at Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita as Scott Roeder, an abortion opponent, faces charges. Tiller, 67, was killed while ushering during services. Hundreds expected at funeral at another Wichita church as leaders condemn the attack.
