Phil L. Unruh, formerly of Copeland, has taken over duties as the administrator of Briar Hill Manor a rest and skilled nursing home. He is the son of Clyde and Mrs. Unruh of Copeland and a Copeland High School Fort Hays graduate. He lives at 407 N 3rd and seeks a registered nurse while keeping the staff intact.
Lawrence A. Wilson has joined the staff of Phillips-White Funeral Home. A Garden City native, he is a 1963 Garden City Junior College graduate and completed the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science last February. He has lived in Garden City since 1959 and is married to Sharon Ann Kreutzer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Tatro. He is a member of St. Marys Catholic Church.
State officials seek extradition of Ernest Ray McElveen 41 of Bogalusa for the murder of Negro deputy sheriff O Neal Moore. Governor Johnson of Mississippi granted time for the extradition hearing in Jackson as investigations involve several suspects. Creed Rogers was wounded in the incident on La 21 near Bogalusa.
A Garden City court roundup shows dismissals at St Catherine Hospital and several suspended sentences and fines in county cases. Notable entries include suspensions for Floyd W. DODGE CITY The Long Branch Saloon variety show opens Saturday for the 1965 season. The Lewis Mock family leads the act with Kitty Mock singing new songs from the 1870s and Dr Lewis E Mock as Professor on piano. The troupe, featuring cancan dancers, has played at over 100 conventions and was filmed for TV in Japan and Great Britain.
Washington AP Congress moves quickly on President Johnsons proposal to cut silver in U S coins. A House Banking Committee hearing with Treasury officials will occur within a day of the message. Lawmakers favor the plan due to silver shortages, while some silver states oppose it.
Grasshopper Arizona AP report says the White Mountain Apache council approved a ceremonial welcome for Lynda Bird Johnson during her two week stay starting June 11. She will visit the University of Arizona and archaeology students as they excavate Pueblo ruins on the eastern Apache reservation.
The SEC report shows private pension funds grew by 5.4 billion to 51.9 billion in assets last year while payments to beneficiaries totaled 1.7 billion. At current market value the funds stood at 63.4 billion, covering corporate employees and many administered by unions. The annual SEC release was issued Thursday night.
TOPEKA AP Garner Stroud of Wichita will replace Hart Workman as executive secretary of the state Republican Central Committee on July 1, the state chairman Oliver Hughes confirmed. Workman praised for long service and counsel while speculation had grown he would be replaced after Gov William Avery became party head. Stroud, a former teacher and oil man, had been a GOF staff member for about three months. Workman has held multiple state posts since the 1930s.
Newton Kansas AP reports Azilda LaGree aged 102, Newton’s oldest resident, died Thursday. She moved from Illinois at 12 and lived most of her life in the Newton area. Services set for Saturday. Survived by two daughters and two sons, nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Husband William LaGree Sr. died in 1933.
