Lifelong love affair with mining may end soon
Irvin and Violet Smith, coal miners in Hay Gulch, have worked together for nearly 50 years at a 1000-foot shaft. New federal regulations under the 1989 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act demand gas and dirt monitoring and new underground facilities, prompting the Smiths to fear government pressure will push them out. They recall moving from Arizona to New Mexico and Colorado, always union with their children in the mines, while resisting inspections and fines they see as unfair.

Kansas Jobless Rate Drop Seen by August
The Kansas unemployment rate, around 4 percent for months, is expected to fall to about 2 percent by mid August says Leo Phalen director of the state Employment Security Division.
