Local sheriffs say strong ties keep peace despite nationwide tensions

Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue and Garden City Police Chief Michael Utz say their agencies maintain good relations with the community after decades in law enforcement. They note few shootings among officers, emphasize thorough force investigations, strict hire screenings, and cameras, plus outreach to strengthen trust.

City county agree on extra work to Law Enforcement Center

Finney County and Garden City have allocated nearly 900 thousand dollars in excess sales tax funds from a 1997 quarter cent levy once used for the Law Enforcement Center debt service. After debt paid early in 2014 and a 2014 extension funding a new Corrections Services building, remaining funds will now upgrade LED systems, HVAC, elevators, doors, carpets, paint, lighting, and court room tech. As of now 573,573 has funded 16 projects, with 325,127 remaining and 141,000 already committed to in progress work including 125,000 for a first floor courtroom remodel, leaving 184,127 for further wish list items.
