Garden City officials vote 5 to 0 to publish a proposed 2008 budget based on last year’s levy of 34,896, with a $401.50 tax on a $100,000 home. A public hearing is set for August 14 at the City Administrative Center. The plan would raise property tax dollars to 4,859,145, a 134,678 increase, while city valuations rise. Mayor Mesa urges more cuts to avoid any increase, noting rising valuations will lift taxes anyway. The commission also cuts a $30,000 airport equipment request and an X-ray unit.

A 70 cent per hour raise to the federal minimum wage takes effect this summer, raising pay from 5.15 to 5.85 dollars for many workers. Garden City business leaders anticipate limited impact on local firms, with some concerns raised by a few employers. The plan, signed by President Bush, will continue increases each summer through 2009 reaching 7.25 minimum.
Lawrence AP report notes Kansas State University will lead a five school COL collaboration to obtain federal funds for a CAMP like program for college bound children of migrant workers. The effort would fund 148 students over five years with 12 credit hours and a living stipend in year one.
