State Board of Education OKs budget request
The Kansas State Board of Education approved a $525 million funding increase for next fiscal year, voting 6 to 8. The proposal will be finalized by education department staff and sent to Gov. Sam Brownback. abstaining board member Kathy Martin. Leaders said the rise would cover legally required items districts must provide as cuts are steadied by tighter state finances. Conservative members argued a slower, inflation-adjusted increase would reflect the economy, suggesting an 8 percent target and leveraging any new revenues.
