Tentative $9 Million Settlement Reached In Louima Case
A nine million dollar tentative settlement was reached in the civil rights suit filed by Haitian immigrant Abner Louima over abuse at Brooklyn's 70th Precinct. The deal, to be reviewed by a federal magistrate in Brooklyn, would be split between the city and the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and could be the largest police brutality settlement in city history. Louima alleged a blue wall of silence and sought reforms, while criminal trials led to guilty verdicts for Volpe and Schwarz.
