Residents react as the city broadens the legal window for fireworks. The ordinance now permits firing within city limits from June 27 to July 5, aligning with the selling period in Finney County. Community members cite safety and noise concerns ahead of Independence Day.
Garden City Commission voted three to two to approve changes, Finney County Commission gave unanimous backing, aligning sale days with enforcement. City Commissioner Melvin Dale voiced concern June 2 that restricting discharge days burdens police and sheriff's officers. Don Jernberg attended the meeting to oppose the extension.
Garden City officials discussed fireworks at a Tuesday town hall with Fire Chief Allen Shelton noting proactive safety efforts by the Fire and Police Departments. No city fires reported since residents began shooting fireworks, while a county fire involved two children and dry grass. The meeting also touched on electric service charges and a new fireworks stand fundraiser run by Garden City Community College volleyball team on Mary Street.
The 25th Judicial District follows the U S Supreme Court ruling to process and approve same sex marriage license applications the same as opposite sex licenses. Chief Judge Wendel Wurst issued an administrative order rescinding the prior bar and directing clerks to process all such applications under one standard protocol. EQES Equality Kansas welcomed the change as state districts align with federal law.
