Critics claim Kansas energy bill favors coal
Environmentalists and some lawmakers deride comprehensive energy legislation as pro coal though it would place Kansas among few states to limit carbon dioxide emissions. The bill would authorize two new coal plants in southwest Kansas while imposing first CO2 standards on future plants. Critics say lax rules let utilities comply easily and could spur more coal plants, risking higher greenhouse emissions. Sunflower Electric and partners back the measure as groundbreaking for jobs and power, after Health Secretary Bremby denied a 1400 MW Sunflower project citing emissions.
