Gray County faces push for single consolidated school district
In 1991 Gray County districts grappled with enrollment declines and funding as Montezuma USD 371 and Copeland USD 476 discussed merging football programs. Talks grew into an inter district plan to merge more sports and schools, with South Gray Junior High in Copeland and South Gray High in Montezuma forming a partial consolidation. A Kansas House bill proposed one countywide district per county with 10 000 or fewer students and a 1500 minimum elsewhere. Sponsor Rep. John Bradford claimed potential savings of about 170 million over 10 years by trimming administration and facilities. The effort faced objections from superintendents who warned against prioritizing efficiency over education.
